Synopsis by Brian J. Dillard

When Angel (David Boreanaz) and Spike (James Marsters) head to Italy on Wolfram & Hart business, they discover that their mutual ex-girlfriend, Buffy Summers(Sarah Michelle Gellar), is there being romanced by The Immortal. An old rival, The Immortal once challenged the vampire buddies for the affections of Darla (Julie Benz) and Drusilla (Juliet Landau) and earned their undying enmity. Torn between their actual mission and their desire to "save" Buffy from her new boyfriend, Angel and Spike cross paths with Andrew (Tom Lenk), but are unable to get more than a glimpse of their vampire-slayer ex. A trip to Wolfram & Hart's Rome office provides the guys with the resources they need to complete one task -- but not the other. Nonetheless, they complete their slow transition from mutual acrimony to uneasy alliance. Meanwhile, back in Los Angeles, Illyria (Amy Acker) horrifies Wesley (Alexis Denisof) when she adopts the mien of her body's former occupant to stave off questions from Fred's visiting parents (Jennifer Griffin and Gary Grubbs). Originally broadcast May 5, 2004, on the WB network, "The Girl in Question" marked season five, episode 20 of the supernatural soap opera. Although Angel's producers originally wanted to sign former Buffy the Vampire Slayer stars Sarah Michelle Gellar and Michelle Trachtenberg for this episode, both actresses were unavailable. With the impending cancellation of Angel, this failure made it unlikely that Gellar would reprise her signature role anytime soon.
