Synopsis by Sandra Brennan

This beautifully rendered, haunting Indonesian realist drama chronicles the relationship between an aged teacher of traditional singing, his student (who copes with a traumatic past) and a lovely young dancer (who is much more than she seems to be). Poor Ilalang, wants to learn to sing and compose, but is unable to escape the constant memories of his father's abuse long enough to really concentrate. It does not help that Waluyo refuses to coddle him and demands his best all the time. Ilalang has been in love with dancer Bulan for ages, but it takes him a long time to tell her. She too keeps her distance, but well into the story, she finally gives in. Afterward she decides she must "purify" herself. This leads the two to make crucial decisions about their futures.
