Synopsis by Mark Deming

A handful of legendary musicians bring the sound of rural America to Europe in this documentary. In 1965, a group of noted American folk and country artists took a break from a concert tour of Europe to visit a German television studio, where they participated in a special program that offered viewers a first-hand glimpse of traditional American musical styles: bluegrass (the Stanley Brothers & the Clinch Mountain Boys), Cajun (Cyprien Landreneau and his band), traditional narrative song (Roscoe Holcomb), old-timey (the New Lost City Ramblers), and hillbilly comedy (Cousin Emmy). American Folk and Country Music preserves this historic broadcast, which includes exclusive performances from all five acts, as well as informative narration (in German) from New Lost City Ramblers leader Mike Seeger.
