Fashion expert Jan Manning (Nancy Olson) faces the loss of her department store when the bank turns down her loan request. She tells her troubles to her salesman boyfriend, Mel Reeves (Ralph Meeker), who suggests that she torch the store and collect a huge insurance settlement -- and to this end, Mel agrees to hire an arsonist. Later on, the store goes up in flames as scheduled, but what happens next to Jan and Mel isn't on anyone's schedule...especially theirs.
