Synopsis by Alice Day

In 1957, the colony of Ghana gained its independence. How this hard-earned distinction came about is discussed in Africa: The Story of a Continent, Program 7 - The Rise of Nationalism, seventh in the series of eight films. Basil Davidson documents events leading up to Ghana's achievement, and highlights similar uprisings against colonial rule. Kenya, the Belgian Congo, Mozambique, Algeria, and Guinea-Bissau all struggled for their independence. The Organization for African Unity is featured, and this installment culminates in the eradication of apartheid in South Africa.
