It is the day after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the Hawaiian Secretary of Internal Affairs (William Forrest) has the painful job of reading a list of casualties: "Dorothy Hughes," the official intones, "Eddie Fields, William Sickner..." The last mentioned, however, was not a fictitious casualty of war, but the serial's veteran cinematographer, presumably an inside joke. The remainder of chapter ten of Adventures of Smilin' Jack belongs squarely to actress Rose Hobart, whose villainous Fraulein Von Teufel finally lets down her guard and uses insidious foreign terms like "nicht war?," "jawol!," and "schnell!"
