George Eliot's novel Adam Bede has been around for over a century and a half, so it's no surprise that it has been subject to stage, screen and TV adaptations during that time (most recently, it was a BBC television miniseries). The 1918 adaptation of Adam Bede was a six-reeler produced in England by International Exclusives, Inc.Bransby Williams plays the title role, the grandson of a country squire. At considerable danger to his own reputation, Adam Bede comes to the rescue of a humble farmer's niece, Ivy Close who has been accused of killing her own out-of-wedlock child. Adam Bede was directed by Maurice Elvey, who during his lengthy career on both sides of the Atlantic helmed some 300 pictures, many of them literary adaptations.
