Synopsis by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Masterpiece Theatre's 1991 production of A Tale of Two Cities is a faithful adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic French Revolution drama. The story focuses on English lawyer Sydney Carton, who has an unrequited love for Lucie Manette, the wife of French aristocrat Charles Darnay. After Charles' uncle, the Marquis St. Evremonde, tramples a young boy with his horse, the Marquis is killed by the boy's father, sparking a revolution. During the revolution, Darnay is persuaded to return to Paris, where he is arrested and sentenced to death. Realizing that Lucie will never love him the way she loves Charles, Sydney takes Darnay's place on death row, thereby letting the aristocrat return to his wife.
