One of the earliest regular programs on pioneering St. Louis educational TV station KETC, A Number of Things "starred" a puppet character named Fignewton Frog, operated and given voice by Leo Velleman. On each 15-minute episode, Fignewton discussed matters of importance (mostly scholarly in nature) with his human co-host, Velleman's wife Doris Velleman. So popular was the series with St. Louis youngsters that, in 1956, filmed kinescopes of A Number of Things were placed into national syndication via the ad hoc NET network (the precursor to PBS). These films remained on the schedule of many a local public-TV outlet until the end of the 1950s.
