Synopsis by Steve Blackburn

Winner of the Columbus Film Festival's Chris Bronze Award, this documentary by Cindy Marshall profiles folklorist Dr. Ruth Rubin, who dedicated her life to preserving Yiddish folk songs. These songs were used in courting, to make laboring less of a chore, and to resist oppression. Highlights include archival photos of Jewish life in Eastern Europe, and footage of Dr. Rubin -- in her eighties -- gathering songs from older Jewish folks in Montreal, participating in a New York folklore conference, and educating young people about Yiddish folk songs and their importance to Jewish life.
