Synopsis by Clarke Fountain
This florid Cuban drama explores the situation of villagers in a seaside town in 17th-century Cuba. They are constantly beaten, robbed, and raped by pirates, and behave in a manner that leads some to believe they are possessed. Certainly, the local priest believes this, and he tries to exorcise the inhabitants and attempts to get them to move inland so that they are no longer prey for pirates. Instead, he becomes prey to the forces that surround him.
