Synopsis by Mark Deming

In 2005, Israeli forces were dispatched to the Gush Katif section of the Gaza Strip, where they were to clear out eight thousand settlers who had been told they would no longer be allowed to stay there. This was not destined to be a simple matter; the Jewish settlers were being moved to make room for nearly a quarter million Palestinians, and a number of Israeli activists were determined to stay rather than allow the land to be taken over by their rivals. Filmmaker Yoav Shamir and a crew of cameramen headed to Gush Katif to capture what happened between August 14 and 18, 2005, as Major General Dan Harel of the Israeli Defense Force took charge of the evacuation of the settlers, and Noam Shapira spearheaded a resistance movement among fellow Jews. 5 Days documents this tumultuous work week, with a different member of Shamir's crew recording each of the five days and offering a different perspective on the evacuation. 5 Days received its North American premiere at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival.
