Synopsis by Nathan Southern

Per its title, the documentary series 1000 Great Masterpieces from the World of Art leads viewers on a systematic journey through art history, with each installment focusing on a specific school or collection. The programs draw on insights by the authors of short art surveys, who provide incisive commentaries that are then illustrated onscreen with specific works. This particular volume travels to MoMA in New York City, for a trip through the world of modern and contemporary art. The episode discusses how such period art collectors as Lillie Bliss and Abby Rockefeller brought an unprecedented appreciation of visual modernism to millions of Americans, by laying the groundwork for the museum. Artworks seen here include: "Christina's World' by Andrew Wyeth, "Flag" by Jasper Johns, and Farewells by Joan MirĂ³. Reiner E. Moritz directs.
