Originally called Girl Fever, this post-teen romantic comedy aspires to be clever and engaging but comes off as ridiculously overwrought. The idea is intriguing -- how did Sam end up surrounded by 100 petulant women at the finale? -- but the ruse is never justified. Writer/director Michael Davis, whose 100 Girls (2000) is frighteningly similar in story and title, would like to be a Farrelly brother -- witness the witless nostril clearing gross-out scene featuring the shameless Clint Howard -- but he'd do better to focus on the romantic aspects for his next film ("100 Mature Ladies," perhaps?). Production values are slick to a shine, so those not paying too much attention will think it's better than it is.
