Traditional westerns are characterized by their lack of complexity and a general absence of moral ambiguity. The characters are clearly defined as good guys or bad guys, and female characters are almost always relegated to secondary roles. Most western films made prior to 1952 are traditional westerns, and most made after 1952 are not.
