A type of adventure where the action takes place in imaginary lands with strange beasts and elemental magic. These films contain many of the elements of the sword-and-sorcery film, but are not necessarily bound to the conventions of the sword and magic. Stories about Atlantis and other mythological lands are popular. In the '50s, a common theme was the journey into another time, usually by underground passage, as in Journey to the Center of the Earth. Jules Verne's book {~20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was the template for a fantasy adventure under the sea. Gulliver's Travels is also one of the favored pieces of literature that has been adapted for this subgenre repeatedly. |
