You Only Live Twice
Description by Steven E. McDonald

MGM/UA's first attempt at releasing the Bond movies in the DVD format was less than impressive, with little in the way of additional material, and mastering that was sometimes dubious despite the use of the THX process. Fortunately, a decision was made to make another pass at the Bond DVDs, with the aim of producing a trio of box sets that would incorporate the first 18 films, with a slot for the 19th, The World Is Not Enough. The first set of seven DVDs actually tended towards overkill, with two commentary tracks per film and as much ancillary material as could be found. This was toned down for the second and third sets, with only a single commentary track on each film, a documentary focusing on the making of the film, ancillary materials, and a subject-specific documentary (in the case of You Only Live Twice, the subject is "Silhouettes -- The James Bond Titles.") The film is presented in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio, in an anamorphic transfer for 16 x 9 TVs. The film has been transferred from a very good print, though some speckles and minor scratches can be seen throughout. Colors are fairly good, with no stridency or bleeding. Print contrast appears to have been fairly low, but this has not affected black levels, which remain solid and detailed. The image is sharp overall, and free from grain for the most part (there is some visible grain during the big action sequence at the end). There is no sign of excessive compression or noise reduction, while edge enhancement seems almost entirely absent. Audio is dual-channel Dolby Mono. Audio restoration for the title has been extremely successful, with no sign of hiss or rumble to be found. While most of the action occurs in the mid-range, there is a clean bass component and a decent upper mid-range. Dialogue is clear and well separated from the music and effects. There is some distortion during the more intense action sequences, though this release also manages to restore some of the high end. The Spanish-language track has a good mix (with a different music and effects mix, oddly enough), with a good voice cast and highly variable matching. The extras on the disc include the commentary, which blends together interview excerpts in an almost scene-specific manner (unfortunately, some of the excerpts practically flash by, right along with the scenes; this is a Bond disc that might have done well with a second commentary track). The commentary track has few pauses and is quite entertaining, though narrator John Cork is rather dull. Also entertaining is the "making of" documentary, "Inside You Only Live Twice." Patrick MacNee narrates, and there are interview excerpts featuring director Lewis Gilbert, set designer Ken Adam, and others. "Silhouettes" is a 23-minute look at the development of the Bond main titles, from Maurice Binder's initial inspirations to the CGI creations used in the latest films. It also serves as a mini-bio of Binder himself. Also under the extras menu are a storyboard sequence, three theatrical trailers, and a TV spot. Of the theatrical trailers, one is a double-bill trailer and looks terrible; the TV spot, which looks slightly better, is for the same double bill. The other two theatrical trailers are the British and U.S. variants of the main release trailer -- basically the same thing, with different voice-overs (quite fascinating for comparison). Finally, there are seven radio spots -- four examples of clever radio copywriting that should bring a smile, plus a trio of more ordinary double-bill spots. The disc is single-sided and dual-layered and is packaged in a keep case with an eight-page booklet that includes a variety of photos and background information.
