Diary of a Country Priest [Criterion Collection]
Description by Mark Deming

Robert Bresson's spare and haunting story one man's struggle for faith against daunting circumstances has been brought to DVD with the care it richly deserves in this release from The Criterion Collection. Le Journal d'un Curé de Campagne (aka Diary of a Country Priest) has been transferred to disc in its original full-frame aspect ratio of 1.33:1, and the disc captures the charcoal-patterned grey tones of Léonce-Henri Burel's photography. The audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital Mono and sounds clear and well-rendered if not especially remarkable. The dialogue is in French, and clear and easily read optional subtitles in English have been included. The only bonus materials included with this edition are the film's original French theatrical trailer and a commentary track from Peter Cowie, who offers a slightly academic but well-informed appreciation of the picture. One can reasonably argue that given the purposeful simplicity of Bresson's film, much more in the way of extras might overwhelm this package, and as a presentation of a landmark film, this disc is a satisfying as the film itself. Final kudos are in order for Christine Ditrio's lovely package design, which is a perfect match for the material.
