Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock race against time (and a bomb on a bus) in the high-octane action-thriller Speed. Fox has done only mediocre work on this title, presenting Speed in a 2.35:1 non-anamorphic widescreen transfer that looks generally good but has some unfortunate imperfections. Edge enhancement is spotted often during the film, and there are some instances of digital artifacting as well. While colors and black levels are all even, overall this could have been a much better looking print. Audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 (in both English and French) and sounds very nice with the use of directional effects maximized during many scenes. All aspects of this track, including the dialogue, effects, and music, were clean and clear of any distortion or hiss. Also included on this disc is a French and Spanish Dolby Digital 2.0 surround track, as well as English subtitles and captions. Sadly, fans of Speed will be sorely disappointed in the extra materials. All that is included on this disc is a theatrical trailer for Speed that isn't very exciting. Someday soon one hopes that Fox will make the decision to put out a new special edition of Speed. Until that time, viewers are stuck with this generally bare-bones edition.
