Small Change
Description by Nick Dedina

An honestly delightful movie that realistically portrays the joys and pains of childhood, Small Change is a welcome addition to any DVD collection. This MGM Home Entertainment release returns the classic François Truffaut movie to its original widescreen aspect ratio, but the transfer wasn't done in the superior anamorphic process. This will make a difference when high-definition television becomes the norm, though this DVD will still play and look good on high-definition systems. The return to widescreen is still a welcome improvement, and the film print, which shows some signs of wear and tear, is itself in better shape than on previous video releases. Truffaut's design for the movie combines documentary-style realism with a subtle but firm command and a slowly evolving narrative thread. This is the kind of movie where the viewer doesn't notice or think about the hand of the director, but Truffaut is in very firm control throughout and he earned amazingly non-mannered performances from a squadron of infants, kids, and adolescents in the process. The mono audio track has been transferred to Dolby Digital 2.0 and comes in the original French language track, as well as English and Spanish ones. Likewise, the disc is subtitled in all three languages. World cinema lost Truffaut to cancer in 1984 and there are no extras on this budget-priced disc. American director Wes Anderson selected this wonderful movie for a popular series in the New York Times in order to discuss how Truffaut inspired and influenced his own, often very different, approach to filmmaking.
