Raising Arizona
Description by Tim DiGravina

Raising Arizona was one of the funniest comedies of the 1980s, and Joel and Ethan Coen's over-the-top kidnapping caper is an entertaining, entirely successful DVD. Cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld's zany camerawork explodes off the screen in this 1.85:1 widescreen transfer. All colors come across perfectly, and the picture quality is excellent throughout the DVD's running time; the Dolby Digital audio is also never less than excellent. It's a technically superior disc in every category. Bonus features are where some disappointment comes into play. Deleted scenes or outtakes would no doubt be roll-on-the-floor funny, but there are none to be found -- merely a couple of TV spots, the original theatrical trailer, and trailers for Barton Fink and Miller's Crossing. That's pretty unexciting, as supplemental features go. Raising Arizona simply cries for a special edition DVD. Still, you are not likely to find a more visually, aurally bold movie at the Coen brothers' budget, and this DVD does technical justice to their skewed slapstick vision.
