Punk: Attitude [2 Discs]
Description by Mark Deming

Frequent Clash collaborator and Big Audio Dynamite member Don Letts directed this documentary on the history and global impact of punk rock, and the feature has been given an appreciative DVD release by Capital Entertainment. Punk: Attitude was shot on high-definition video and has been transferred to disc in letterboxed format at the widescreen ratio of 16 x 9, and is also enhanced for anamorphic play on high-definition widescreen monitors. The audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital Stereo; the interviews and narration are in English with optional subtitles in English, French, and Spanish. The package includes a treasure trove of bonus materials, including a bonus documentary on the Los Angeles punk scene, an interview with Sex Pistols producer and soundman Dave Goodman, biographies and updates on the artists profiled, and a "family tree" feature which allows users to examine other groups the artists have been in (though the trees don't appear to be very extensive or comprehensive). Over two hours of additional interview footage has been included on a bonus disc, which is grouped thematically around a variety of topics. And the handsome package includes a replica of issue number seven (from 1977) of the seminal British punk fanzine {~Sniffin' Glue, which includes an interview with one Don Letts. Anyone interested in the formative years of punk rock, both in the United States and Britain, will enjoy this film and have fun with the DVD. (Though Letts and his crew ought to know that the band called the Teen Idols pictured in the movie isn't Ian MacKaye's The Teen Idles, who are the group being discussed on the soundtrack!)
