This typically cool and understated thriller from French filmmaker Jean-Pierre Melville gets a loving and detailed presentation in this DVD edition from The Criterion Collection. Le Cercle Rouge has been given a letterboxed transfer at the widescreen aspect ratio of 1.66:1, and the audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital Mono. The dialogue is in French, and the disc features optional English-language subtitles. This release includes a wealth of bonus material, including Jean-Pierre Melville (Portrait en 9 Poses), a 1970 documentary on the director; interviews with Melville and stars Alain Delon, Yves Montand, and André Bourvil conducted during the shooting of the film; new interviews with Melville's assistant director Bernard Stora and Rui Nogueira, a friend of the filmmaker who edited a book of his writings; archival interviews with Delon and Melville recorded for French television; a gallery of production and publicity pictures and publicity art; and trailers for the film's original release and its 2002 reissue. The disc's booklet also includes essays on the film from journalists Chris Fujiwara and Michael Sragow, an introduction from noted Melville enthusiast John Woo, and an extract from Nogueira's book regarding Le Cercle Rouge. |
