The earliest Stanley Kubrick title to be released on DVD, Killer's Kiss is (for the most part) of greatest interest because it shows the director's distinctive visual style to be very much in place so early in his career, and while the DVD has little in the way of frills, it at least makes a great looking transfer of the film easily available at last. Killer's Kiss has been transferred to disc in its original full-frame aspect ratio of 1.33:1, and the clean source materials and careful rendering of light and shade confirm that the picture was far more visually savvy than anyone might have expected from a low-budget film noir in 1955. The audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital Mono and sounds clear and rich, though as a result it makes the film's mostly post-synched dialogue all the more obvious. The dialogue is in English with optional English and French subtitles. Except for a trailer (that for some reason keeps going to black screen), this edition of Killer's Kiss doesn't feature any extras, though its a fair question if anything else needs to be said about such a modest film; it certainly makes the film look as good as anyone might hope, and at a reasonable price to boot. |
