Confidentially Yours
Description by Nick Dedina

The original release of Confidentially Yours was overshadowed by the news of writer/director François Truffaut's tragic demise. At the time, Truffaut's premature death from cancer overshadowed the movie's considerable charms. Thankfully, this Fox/Lorber DVD release of the fast-paced mystery puts the movie into a new light. An homage to both American low-budget film noir and glitzy Hollywood romantic comedies of the 1940s and 50s, Confidentially Yours is Truffaut's heartfelt valentine to the movies that he grew up on. Nestor Almendros' stark, high-contrast black-&-white cinematography is showcased on the widescreen, single-layer transfer, and the English language subtitles are wisely placed outside the frame. Like most initial Fox/Lorber DVD releases, the transfer wasn't done in the superior anamorphic process, but it looks good regardless. The only real extras are a number of trailers for Truffaut's pictures. The audio track is well balanced and, like the visuals, it was done in the same manner as 1950s Hollywood movies.
