MGM has done a decent if uninspired job with this disc of Beach Red. The video transfer is the best part, offering a handsome-looking letterboxed image that capture the film's jungle-set visual textures with plenty of depth in both color and clarity. Unfortunately, they neglected to give it anamorphic enhancement for widescreen televisions. The mono soundtrack sounds a bit low but boosting the volume reduces this problem. The only extra offered on the disc is the film's powerful theatrical trailer. It's unfortunate that a film this influential didn't receive a featurette about the directing career of Cornel Wilde or a commentary track from one of the film's many filmmaker fans (Oliver Stone is a good example of someone who has admitted to being influenced by Beach Red). That said, this disc offers a solid-looking version of Beach Red despite its lack of anamorphic enhancement and is thus worthwhile for any interested viewers. |
