A handful of the world's leading filmmakers -- including Jean-Luc Godard, Bernardo Bertolucci, and Pier Paolo Pasolini -- contributed to this five-part omnibus feature, which has been rarely seen in the United States prior to the release of this DVD edition from No Shame Films. Love and Anger (aka Amore e Rabbia) has been given a letterboxed transfer to disc in the widescreen aspect ratio of 2:35:1, which has also been enhanced for anamorphic playback on 16 x 9 monitors. The source materials have been well cared for, and the transfer is superb, offering crisp images and an excellent color balance. The dialogue is in Italian and French, with optional subtitles in English. The audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital Stereo, retaining the balance of the original monophonic sound mix, and while the audio shows some occasional distortion, overall the quality is fine for the period. As a bonus, this package includes a bonus disc featuring extensive interviews with filmmakers Marco Bellocchio and Carlo Lizzani, editor Roberto Perpignani (who cut Bertolucci's segment), and assistant director Maurizio Ponzi (who worked with Pasolini), as well as some silent outtakes and screen test footage and a gallery of stills and promotional posters. A booklet featuring biographies of the directors is also included. If Amore e Rabbia isn't one of the better European anthology films of the 1960s, at the very least No Shame is to be commended for giving it such a quality release on DVD, and allowing film enthusiasts the chance to fill in this gap in the filmographies of several leading filmmakers of the period.
