biography
On the British stage from her early teens, actress Yvonne Mitchell developed into one of the most distinguished interpreters of the classics. From 1949's The Queen of Spades onward, Ms. Mitchell made an average of one film per year, always in commanding roles. She won the British Film Award for her work in 1954's Divided Heart, and the Berlin Film Festival award for 1987's Woman in a Dressing Gown. An accomplished playwright, essayist and novelist, Ms. Mitchell wrote her autobiography in 1975. Yvonne Mitchell was married to film and theatre critic Derek Monsey, who discreetly avoided reviewing any of his wife's stage or screen work.
