Filmmaker Vitautus Zalakevicius was a leading maker of Lithuanian feature films, particularly during the 1960s and 1970s. Zalakevicius also wrote the screenplays for many of his films. Before turning to cinema, he studied engineering for a year at Kaunas University, then went to Moscow to study direction at V.G.I.K. His graduation film was Skenduolis/Drowned (1956). The following year, Zalakevicius co-directed Kol Nevelu/It Is Not Too Late with Julij Fogelman. He subsequently turned out a film every two or three years through 1987. Zalakevicius occasionally did television work, as well.
