Esteemed Spanish filmmaker Ventura Pons learned direction through his involvement in theater. As a stage director, he worked with material ranging from Shakespearean classics, to contemporary international plays, to local Catalan productions. With the exception of his debut film, a documentary about famed transvestite artist Ocaña, Ocaña, Retrato Intermitiente/Ocaña, an Intermittant Portrait, and his 1988 fictional feature Puta Misèria/Miserable Poverty!, all of Pons' films have been made with Catalan dialogue.
