biography
British-born, American-reared Sydney Ainsworth came to films as early as 1909 after an auspicious stage career where he had supported the legendary Maude Adams in The Little Minister and appeared in the original Broadway production of Frank L. Baum's The Wizard of Oz. A member of the Goldwyn stock company, the balding 5'11" Ainsworth mainly played arrogant villains in a burgeoning screen career that came to a halt with his sudden death at the relatively young age of 50.
