Biography by AllMovie

Director Sara Gomez' best-known film, De cierta manera, a romance loosely based upon her affair with a sound man, was a complex blend of fiction and documentary coupled with an assortment of professional and non-professional actors. It not only told a love story, it also scathingly examined the contradictions of the Cuban revolution. Gomez died while the film was in post-production, and it was completed by Tomas Gutierrez Alea. Before joining the Cuban Film Institute (ICAIC) in 1961, Gomez studied literature, piano, and Afro-Cuban ethnography. She also worked as a journalist. In the newly created ICAIC, she worked as an assistant director to directors Jorge Fraga, and Tomas Guiterrez Alea. She also worked with French director Agnes Varda and went on to do a series of documentaries before making her first full-length feature.
