American cinematographer Robert Surtees began his career in 1927 as an assistant cameraman to Gregg Toland and others. He became a full-fledged lighting director in the 1940s and soon became one of Hollywood's most prominent cinematographers noted for his lush images and consistency. During his long career, Surtees won three Academy awards.
