After studying film at Paris' Insitut des Hautes Etudes Cinematographique, Robert Enrico became an editor and assistant director. By the early '50s he was helming shorts for French television; while in the service later in the decade, he directed documentaries and instructional films for the French military. He won international praise for his short film Incident at Owl Creek; combining it with adaptations of two other stories by Ambrose Bierce ("The Mockingbird" and "Chicamauga"), Enrico made his first feature, Au Coeur De La Vie (aka In the Midst of Life) in 1962. His notable later films include the coming-of-age drama Tante Zita (aka Zita), Le Secret, and Zone Rouge, all of which he co-scripted.
