A California native who earned her degree in psychology from California State University in Sacramento before entering into the world of broadcasting, René Syler is perhaps best known to television viewers as the former co-host of CBS News' The Early Show. In addition to interviewing such notable figures as Laura Bush, Colin Powell, and Senator John McCain for the popular morning show, Syler also impressed viewers with her coverage of Hurricane Charley and President Ronald Reagan's funeral. In 2006, while making the decision to have a prophylactic mastectomy after numerous breast cancer scares, Syler departed from The Early Show and would subsequently step in as occasional co-host for The View and Today. In addition to her television work, Syler also authored the book Good Enough Mother, in which she emphasized adequate parenting over the ever-elusive quest for perfection.
