One of Italy's most prominent directors of photography, Pasqualino de Santis worked closely with such directors as Franchesco Rosi, Luchino Visconti and Robert Bresson. In 1969, he earned an Academy Award for his superb photography of Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet. De Santis started out as an apprentice/camera operator for master cinematographer Gianni Di Venanzo. De Santis died of heart failure in the Ukraine on June 23, 1996 while filming scenes for Francesco Rosi's La Tregua/The Truce (the film was released in 1997).
