American screenwriter Oliver H. P. Garrett launched his movie career at Paramount in 1928. Willing to tackle any sort of subject, Garrett's film work ranged from screwball comedies like She Couldn't Take It (1935) to social-protest tracts like One Third of a Nation (1939). His personal and professional association with producer David O. Selznick, which began when both men were at Paramount and included Garrett's uncredited contributions to Gone With the Wind (1939), culminated in Garrett's screenplay for Selznick's outsized western Duel in the Sun (1946). In 1942, Oliver H. P. Garrett took a one-time fling at directing with the 20th Century-Fox programmer Careful, Soft Shoulders.
