A Jewish character actor from Russia, M.W. Rale (born Israele) appeared in numerous Broadway productions in the 1910s, including such shows as Officer 666 and La La Lucile (both 1919). Rale, who sometimes billed himself Michael Rayle or Michael Rale, played Asian characters onscreen, notably in Wharton brothers serials like The Exploits of Elaine (1914), The Mysteries of Myra (1916), and Patria (1916). He can be seen today as the procurer in Norma Talmadge's The Forbidden City (1918). On Broadway as late as 1928 in Sakura, the veteran performer spent his final years in a retirement home for actors in New Jersey. He died in 1940 at the age of 63.
