Michael Mann on AllMovie

After studying at the London Film School, Mann began helming commercials and documentaries in the mid '60s. He came to the States to make the documentary 18 Days Down the Line, and stayed on to write for television. He directed the acclaimed television prison film The Jericho Mile in 1979, and in 1981 helmed his first theatrical feature, Thief. His other '80s efforts, the horror tale The Keep and the science-fictioner Manhunter, have their admirers, but it was Mann's The Last of the Mohicans, adapted from James Fenimore Cooper, which became his breakthrough film in the '90s.
