biography
From childhood she performed on the Austrian and German stage, later training with Max Reinhardt and appearing in a few minor German films. She moved to Hollywood in the mid '30s, hyped by the studios as another Garbo. Although she appeared in only a handful of films, she quickly won Best Actress Oscars in consecutive years in The Great Ziegfeld (1936) and The Good Earth (1937). However, she fit in poorly with the Hollywood studio system, and her screen career soon ended with considerable enmity between herself and movie mogul Louis B. Mayer. She went on to star on Broadway. From 1937-40 she was married to playwright Clifford Odets.
