Though he was young, Louis Delluc was a promising filmmaker who looked as if he would have a long, distinguished career ahead of him until his life was cut short by tuberculosis at age 33 in 1924. Delluc was also a well-known and influential film theorist and writer who founded many of France's prestigious cinema clubs. Delluc was one of the first to promote film as an art form. As a teen, he studied in Paris, but dropped out before he was 16 to work as a journalist with a special interest in theater. Film became his next passion and he wrote numerous articles and essays for periodicals and books. Delluc began directing films in the early 1920s. They usually starred his wife Eve Francis and he generally wrote the scripts. These films were particularly noted for their psychological undertones and the ways in which Delluc manipulated time frames.
