American screenwriter John L. Balderston specialized in writing plays and horror and fantasy scripts for movies. Prior to this, he was a war correspondent in Europe during WW I, the editor of Outlook magazine, and a correspondent for the New York World. His stage plays Dracula and Frankenstein were both adapted into classic horror movies in 1931. Among the famous books he adapted to screen are Prisoner of Zenda (1937) and Gaslight (1944).
