biography
A buxom character actress from New York (although some publicity claimed the U.K. as her birthplace), Ida Lewis toured with several West Coast companies and appeared in the hit Broadway play Merely Mary Ann (1903). She entered motion pictures in 1914 with the Santa Barbara-based American company and went on to play mother roles in scores of silent films, including at least four starring bucolic Charles Ray. Lewis weathered the transition to sound and played Carole Lombard's grandmother in Alexander Hall's romantic Sinners in the Sun (1932).
