An editor in British films by the late '20s, Dalrymple began writing scripts in the '30s, including such notable films as Pygmalion, The Citadel, and Q Planes. He directed his script for Old Bill and Son in 1940, and for Esther Waters in 1948. Dalrymple also began producing in the '40s, with credits including Perfect Strangers (directed by Alexander Korda), The Wooden Horse, The Heart of the Matter, and A Cry from the Streets.
