biography
Indian-born director Gurinder Chadha was raised in Southall, England, where she began her career working for the BBC. She produced a documentary for Channel 4 in 1989 called I'm British But. . ., which explored the experiences of young British Asians, and by the next year the burgeoning director had launched her own production company, Umbi Films. She would direct several films over the coming years, including Bhaji on the Beach, Bend It Like Beckham, and Bride and Prejudice.
