Actor/director Giancarlo Sbragia was a towering figure in Italian theater for over 50 years. A versatile performer, he was equally at home in classical and modern drama. Despite his fame on stage, he could never quite attain the same popularity in films. Sbragia specialized in historical epics such as Il Crollo di Roma. From the 1970s onward, his film appearances were sporadic.
