The writings of film theorist Gerald Mast have helped to establish the credibility of studying cinema in the academic world. He was keenly interested in the relationship between film and literature and made some solid claims about movies replacing novels as the primary art form of the 20th century. He taught his theories at various schools including City University of New York and the University of Chicago.
