Socially conscious playwright George Sklar got his start in 1934 with Stevedore. Later he founded the Theater Union to produce plays aimed at American society's economically oppressed. In 1932, Merry-Go-Round, the play he co-wrote with Albert Maltz, was adapted into the film Afraid to Talk. In 1943, Sklar co-penned the screenplay for First Comes Courage. In the early '50s, Sklar's political views got him blacklisted.
