British cinematographer Frederick A. Young (aka Freddie Young) is one of the most important photographers in the history of motion pictures. Since the mid '20s, he has photographed movies as varied as 49th Parallel, Caesar and Cleopatra (which he co-directed), The Winslow Boy, Ivanhoe, Lust for Life, Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago, Ryan's Daughter, and Stevie, winning Oscars for Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago, and Ryan's Daughter. A major figure behind the camera, Young only directed his first film--Arthur's Hallowed Ground (1983)--after almost 60 years in the business and got good notices for his work. He was still shooting the occasional commercial into the end of the '80s, but his recent loss of sight in one eye finally ended his nearly seven-decade career in movies.
