A 1928 WAMPAS Baby Star, Ethlyne Clair (née Williamson) had appeared in Universal's popular The Newlyweds and Their Baby comedy series prior to co-starring in two fine action serials, The Vanishing Rider and Queen of the Northwoods (both 1928). In all likelihood a victim of the sound revolution, Clair herself blamed tyro mogul Darryl F. Zanuck, whom she claimed had blacklisted her after she spurned his advances on the set of God's Gift to Women (1931). By then, she was already married to makeup man Ernest Westmore, a union that had begun ominously when the groom's ex-wife turned up at the ceremony demanding alimony. Divorced in 1937 and later remarried, Ethlyne Clair died from a perforated ulcer in 1996 at the age of 91.
